OnePlus, the New Samsung?

If you clicked on this, there’s a good chance you’ve heard on OnePlus. They’ve always been praised for giving the customers value for money. In recent years, they’ve slowly and maturely gained a very committed fan base. Today, we’re going to talk about how OnePlus might replace Samsung as the default phone option and the Android king. I’m going to have multiple categories and declare a winner for each one. Before we dive into that though, let’s talk about OnePlus itself and explain to the people who don’t know who they are.

Who is OnePlus

In case you have no idea what OnePlus is, let me fill you in. They’re the new kid in the town and they dropped the OnePlus One. They almost instantly explode in the enthusiast community. OnePlus is a brother company of Vivo, Rino, and some others. They’ve also slowly gained a reputation for “Bang for the Buck” which means value for money.

OnePlus has also gone from the little leagues to the major leagues. Their motto has also changed over the years. From “Flagship Killer” to “Never Settle” They’ve changed it because now they also make flagships. Now that you have an idea of who OnePlus is and how they became who they are, let’s talk about the battle.

Fan Base

Fan base is a fascinating topic for both OnePlus and Samsung. If we’re talking about raw numbers, then Samsung takes the crown, no questions asked. However, there is more than that. OnePlus might not have as many fans as Samsung, however, OnePlus have one of the most committed fan bases in all of the tech industry. Just after Apple.

Samsung never had the most committed fan base because there are so many options with Android. OnePlus on the other hand, somehow managed to get such a committed fan base even in this heated battle, so props to them. This was close call, but I think a committed fan base is more important than a big fan base. Therefore OnePlus wins in this category.

Design

This is almost a no-brainer. The design of the Samsung Galaxy S21 line-up is amazing. Being proud of the camera and making them a part of the phone is great. It speaks so much about the phone. Instead of trying to hide the camera, Samsung embraced it.

Compare that to the OnePlus 8 lineup. It’s not a bad design, by any stretch of the imagination. I’d say they have the best design if we exclude the S21 and Note 20 Lineup. You might say it’s not fair because OnePlus haven’t released the OnePlus 9 lineup yet, but if it’s anything like the leaks, then it’s still a no-brainer. Samsung wins.

Value for Money

I’m going to split this section into two categories, Flagship and Midrange/Budget. So two possible points for this section. First and foremost, let’s talk Flagship. These are the ones that get all the flashy reviews and media coverage. These types of phones compete on the specification and special features. I’m just going to compare the top-of-the-line flagships from both companies. Samsung has a bigger battery and a better chipset [because the OnePlus 9 isn’t released yet]. OnePlus is cheaper, has an internationally unified chipset. They both have their pros and cons so it comes down to personal preference. I call this a draw, but if you favor one over the other, then feel free to add personal points for them.

The midrange is a different story. The two companies are quite different, but both in good ways. Let’s start with Samsung. Samsung’s Galaxy A series [aka their midrange series] is quite a fascinating one. They have a lot of different midrange phones, each one with different specs and prices. Samsung’s approach to midrange phones seems to be giving the customers a lot of different choices. From the flip camera to the lowest end phone, you get a ton of choices. OnePlus have a very different approach to midrange phones. They don’t give you a ton of choices. From the normal OnePlus Nord to the N100, you only get a handful of choices. Although you don’t get a lot of choices, all of them give insane value. Not only that, but they are also good phones [They didn’t just fill out a spec sheet]. So, what is important? Option or value? If this was a flagship it would be an option, however, people who buy midrange phones are a lot more budget restrained and will want as much value for money as possible. So for this one, I would say OnePlus, the New Samsung?

Summary

In the end, OnePlus reign supreme. But does that mean they will be the next Android king? We’ll have to wait and see.
