A few years ago, Asus released the ROG phone 1. It was the first ever, fully fledged gaming phone. Since then, Asus have released 5 successor to it (ROG phone 2, 3, 5, 5 pro, 5 ultimate) There has also been some more company that has entered this gaming phone market. These include phones like the Red Magic 3, Lenovo Legion Duel 2 and the list goes on. This gaming phone market has grown a lot in the past few years, so I think it’s time that I finally address it. Is a gaming phone worth it?

Specs

Gaming phones almost always have the latest and greatest when it comes to specs. This is to give the user a smooth gaming experience, of course. They always have a ludicrous amount of RAM, an ok amount of storage and needless to say, the latest and greatest chipset. Gaming phones are almost always a behemoth when it comes to specification, so I think there is really no point in dwelling here for too long.

Speakers

Gaming phones usually have a great pair of stereo speakers so that the user can have a more immersive gaming experience. In some more competitive games, to potentially better understand where the enemy is. They normally will have a amplified ear piece speaker at the top and a normal speaker at the bottom. Gaming phones are also generally large, so they will have a lot of space to push air, making the sound fuller and better.

Cameras

Historically, the cameras are one of the major component where the gaming phones lack behind. Although the camera on gaming phones nowadays still aren’t the best or top-of-the-line, it has definitely gotten better. Typically, a gaming phone will have a 48MP/64MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide and/or a 2 times telephoto. The software and other things in the camera department will also lack behind. Think of it like the camera assortment of a mid-ranger and a stock android software for the camera.

Software

The software sweet mostly depends on the company you are buying the phone from, so there is no one-size-fits-all summary I can give you. However, most gaming phone nowadays does let you choose if you want a cool gamer ascetic or something that more resembles stock android. So I’d say there is nothing impressive about a gaming phone’s software but there also isn’t much to complaint about.

Extras

Gaming phones almost always have a lot of accessories that comes bundled with it. Or they might just have those accessories come integrated within the phone itself, there are also many types or accessories for gaming phones; Fan, shoulder buttons, grips and more. Gaming phones not only have extras for hardware, they also have extras for software, like the gaming genie, hyper performance mode and more.

Summary & Which One to Buy.

So a short and sweet summary of this is, gaming phones are worth it if you know what you are getting. If what you care about is Specs, speakers and performance than gaming phones are 100% worth it. However, if you care about camera quality, smaller sizes or build, than gaming phones are a no-go.

As for which one you should buy, I would go with the Lenovo Legion Duel 2 if price wasn’t a problem and the ROG Phone 5 if you want a more value for money orientated phone.
